DIY Theatre is a Calgary-based, independent, semi-professional theatre company and we are recruiting members to our voluntary Board of Directors.

We are a registered non-profit organization and although we are small, we are very mighty and we are at an exciting point in our organizational growth! This is a rewarding, exciting and varied position that will help shape the future of DIY. 

As a member of a board of directors, you play a vital role in shaping the direction and decisions of DIY Theatre Society. Your commitment to governance, strategic planning, and oversight is essential in guiding DIY Theatre towards its objectives. With a responsibility to act in the best interests of the organization, being a board member involves a blend of leadership, collaboration, and accountability. Embrace the opportunity to contribute your expertise and perspective towards the collective success and sustainability of DIY Theatre.

DIY Theatre is committed to producing work that is raw, authentic, and embraces the flawed through examining issues of conscience, ethics and morality in both classical and contemporary theatre. All of our work is chosen with the intent of provoking conversation and focuses on drawing in the audience like a good story being told around a fire.

We are theatre artists who have come together through our passion for the performing arts to foster exceptional talent and provide our audience with a high quality theatre experience. Here at DIY Theatre, we value the artists - both on stage and behind the scenes - who put their hearts and souls into creating meaningful art.

An ideal candidate would have experience in business or non-profit organizations and is knowledgeable of the tools necessary for understanding and communicating the activities and performance of a small non-profit organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring accountability and compliance with our Bylaws.

  • Contributing to the strategic direction of DIY Theatre.

  • Supporting DIY Theatre staff, currently our Artistic Director and General Manager.

  • Fundraising and fund development.

  • Representing the organization to the community at our own performances and events as well as other networking opportunities.

  • Attend monthly Board Meetings (currently held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month via Teams).

  • Reviews, approves and oversees the organization’s documents.                    

Desired Qualifications:

At DIY Theatre, we are looking for dedicated individuals to join our non-profit board and contribute to our mission of making the arts accessible to all. Ideal candidates should possess a passion for the arts and a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity.

  • Experience in non-profit governance or related fields.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A willingness to actively participate in fundraising and advocacy efforts.

  • The ability to think strategically and work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders.

  • A commitment to promoting equity and access in the arts.

Board members are entrusted with making decisions that align with the organization's values and goals, ultimately working towards its long-term sustainability and impact. It is essential for board members to actively participate, bring their diverse expertise to the table, and act in the best interest of the Society and those it serves.

Are you wanting to be involved, but aren’t sure if serving on the Board of Directors is right for you? We are always looking for people to join us on stage and off stage with a variety of performing and production team roles needing to be filled, not to mention volunteer ushers for our shows.
